Booming Respect for Winnall Rock School

Winnall Rock School’s Christmas 2018 Show saw the achievement of the Autumn term’s goal to compose and perform 15 original songs in a variety of pop and rock styles. As well as creating improvised pieces on-the-spot, the volunteer tutors also got their moment of fame with a genre-bending version of Respect, paying tribute to Aretha Franklin’s passing and emphasising the school’s values.

Special guest Cllr Frank Pearson, the current mayor, assisted with the fundraising raffle and led the audience’s appreciation of the great steps made by all the young members in developing their talents.

As well as the performances, audience heard that the Rock School had also received awards of over £6,000 and £1,000 from the Boomtown Festival and Santander Foundation. Other exciting projects are also in hand including support for a benefit concert for Winchester Youth Counselling at the Railway Inn on January 26th

Chairman Paul Pounsford, told the packed room that the rock school goes from strength to strength in supporting local young people but always welcomes new support with fundraising, tutoring and youth focussed partnerships.

Summer Show 2017 - Samba, Rocking and Mayor Hugging

This year’s Winnall Rock School Summer Show was fitting climax to a season of hard work that included a recent performance at the Alresford Music Festival.

From the 8-year olds in The Ukulele Unicorns to the 18-year olds in New Boy Done Good, there was much for the audience to applaud, whoop and cheer.  The Tutors also performed their customary tribute song, this time acknowledging the recent sad events in Manchester with a very upbeat Look Back in Anger

The school’s annual awards were presented by the Mayor of Winchester, David MacLean who commented on the talents and effervescent enthusiasm of the members and received a bear hug in return.

The grand finale was a deafening ensemble Samba drum piece played with precision by the cast of 31 children and tutors.

Music Leader Chris Redmond summed it up.  “It’s been another fantastic year at WRS. We’ve had some cracking gigs, made some great songs and explored all kinds of music creation and performance techniques. I’d like to congratulate everyone for a really solid show at the Theatre Royal. It was great fun and you all did yourselves proud.”

Christmas Show 3rd Dec 2016

Hallelujah - The Major had a great time at our Christmas Show.

During a relatively short autumn term, all our bands worked hard and preparing great sounding, well-crafted, fun and original songs. When it came to our show, nerves were strong for some of our newcomers, but everyone stepped up in dealing with them and helping others deal with theirs. Along with showing really strong communication between everyone, the result was a really strong gig with a very warm, appreciative audience. Included in the audience was the Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Jane Rutter who tweeted how much she enjoyed the show and joining the Tutors in their rendition of Hallelujah. We now look forward to another term of marvellous music making and performance opportunities. Watch this space!
